January Meeting and a Block Exchange

Hi Quilters,

If you missed the meeting this morning at Elaine's and want to join in the quilt block exchange the information is listed below. Kathy Tidwell has also invited us to join her at the Bear Lake Cabin for a quilting retreat and that information is also below. Please note that Kathy needs to have a firm commitment for anyone who is going by the 16th of January. The retreat is Jan. 25-27.


Quilt block exchange information

The theme is baskets, any pattern, any type (applique, pieced, paper-pieced, three dimensional, etc.)
All blocks are to be ON POINT.
Blocks are to be 8" finished, 8 1/2" unfinished, but do not trim them.
All participants will need to buy 3/4 yd of the same background fabric to use in the blocks. We purchased all that Elaine's had but another bolt of the background fabric is on order at Elaine's and will be on hold for our group when it comes in (if you didn't get yours on Tuesday). Bonnie has the fabric information should you wish to try and obtain it elsewhere before Elaine's gets a new bolt.
The color palate is the fabric Sweet Liberty by P & B Textiles (the ecru background). You may want to include this fabric in your block but it is not mandatory that you do so. The swatch is primarily to be used as a color palette so there is continuity in all blocks.  Bonnie has swatches of the flower fabric for those of you who didn't get one already.  Call her if you need it.

The blocks need to be finished and ready to exchange at our June quilt group meeting.

I think all but the last six people on the list got their background fabric and palate swatch. If you had someone pick yours up be sure to get in touch with them. Elaine's ran out of fabric so we are aware that some of you did not get your fabric today. Anyone else who wants to join in needs to let us know by our next meeting when we will give everyone the final count and number of blocks that need to be made.
People are encouraged to bring a sample of their block to the next meeting.

A huge "Thank You" to Kathy T. and Cristie for organizing the block exchange. They did a lot of work, as well as putting together swatches to be voted upon for the colors. We look forward to a fun exchange and hope everyone that can/wants to will participate.

We had a great brunch at Tracie's house last week.  Her home was decorated so beautifully and the company was great.  Their were many requests for recipes of the dishes that were contributed.  Hopefully we will get the cookbook out sometime this year.

We will be meeting at Elaine's in Jan.  We will be working on our own individual projects and don't forget to bring your Show-and-Tells.

Hi Quilters

I was e-mailed this link for a new website.  It's called Find My Fabric.  I think this will be a great tool for those of us who run out of fabric or who are looking for something hard to find in our local area.

This site allows you to upload a photo of the fabric you are looking for and they will find it for you.  How great is that?  I've added the link on the side bar under Great Quilting Reads.

Quilt Fest

Hi everyone,

The QQQ's are back from Midway and Quilt Fest.  As you can see from the photo I took from the conference center at Zermatt, it was rainy and cold, but the view couldn't be much better.  The view looking west was even prettier but I had forgotten to bring my camera when I had a window classroom.

Thanks Kathy, for lining up the condo for us to stay in.  It was a lovely home and so comfortable.  We were lucky to be so close to the action and yet have our own private area.  Everyone brought food to eat when we needed a quick meal at the condo and there were some fabulous recipes.  We had the best of both worlds.

My week started with the Wednesday luncheon.  We went as a group and had a great table at the front.  Some of the members came as guests.  Our speaker was the entertaining Nora McMeakin, one of the national teachers.  She gave a lecture and slide show on her experiences of living and quilting in England.  She was witty and entertaining.  We were treated to some great photos of beautiful scenery and English quilts.  Laurie and Shelley had to return home but were able to do a little shopping at the market before leaving and to see all the beautiful quilts entered in the Quilt Show and competition.  Liz, Gretchen, Kathy, Cristie, Shawn, Tami, and myself (Bonnie) were able to stay until Friday and attend some classes.  We also did some shopping (some did QUITE a bit of shopping) at the market.

 This was a great opportunity to see many new products and great fabrics and vendors all in one place.  Liz won a quilt kit in the market and  Kathy won a beauty kit at the market.  Contact her if you need a hot hand wax (there were all kinds of prizes)

John Flynn teaching

Thursday John Flynn wowed us with an after luncheon lecture and trunk show.  He passed his fabulous quilts around for us to get a closer look.  John is a favorite teacher and lecturer of returning quilt market attendees.  He has been a featured national teacher many times before at Quilt Fest and is always funny and sharp and witty.  Not the typical quilter, he is certainly one of the most talented and sought after teachers.

We went to dinner at the Snake Creek Grill in Heber on Thursday evening.  It was so much fun and the food was wonderful.  We especially liked the ginger cookie sandwiches (recommended by Tami) which were served with a caramel dipping sauce (possibly the best dessert I had all week).  Ask Liz about the hand- made chocolates she bought at the market.  They sounded delicious too.

I didn't attend the Friday luncheon, but I understand that the speaker was a great teacher.  She was one of the national teachers.  I think that Liz had a chance to take one of her classes and she had only high praise for Sue Nickels.  We all left on Friday to come home and I think that everyone had a great time.  Wish you could have been there with us.  We missed you.

See you in November, the first Tuesday at Elaine's Quilt Block at 10:00 AM sharp.  We will be treated to a trunk show by Sidney Haglund.  Feel free to invite a guest to this activity.

P.S.  I kept forgetting to take photos.  I was too busy in classes or shopping and looking at the beautiful quilts and eating (I must admit to that I suppose).  I did manage to take a few when Cristie reminded me so I'll post those.  Hopefully you will get to see some of what the rest of us did at Quilt Fest.  I know that they'll share in the coming months. 



Two Quilt Exhibits and Thoughts on How to See Them

I had an enlightening conversation with Gretchen about visiting a quilt show after she had gone with Craig to the Israeli Quilt Exhibit last week. “You only need 10 minutes”, she said. Sometimes I feel like I should block out a longer period of time and that keeps me from going. I appreciated the advice and thought it might be a good thing to pass along to the group.

Our new blog

Hi QQQ's,
Welcome to our new blog!  This will be the spot to come during the month to keep updated with your fellow QQQ's until the next meeting.  For those of you who may not be familiar with the blogging world, just click on the Follow button on the sidebar to get new posts.  We will be posting announcements as well as useful links and other information here.  This will not be our only form of communication but hopefully it will be fun as well as a source of information.  It's still under contstruction so "pardon the mess" until we're really up and running.

Friday Night

 We are just home from our annual retreat at Gretchen's cabin.  It was a great way to start off our year.  Cristie made a photo collage which you can see at the bottom of the blog.  Blogger was not cooperating well so more photos will be uploaded when it quits it's tantrum.

We ate some wonderful food, worked on our projects, shared, made plans for the upcoming year, and laughed.....a lot.  Gretchen, ever the great hostess, made sure that we all had a great time.  If you weren't able to come, know that you were missed.

Many members had expressed the desire to vote upon rules for adding new members, controlling the size of the group, and dues, etc. and by-laws were voted upon and passed by majority. 
The new by-laws are:

1. Annual dues will be $10.00, and must be remitted to the treasurer (Laurie Little) no later than September 30th to hold a membership spot in QQQ's for the upcoming year.
2. Number of members will be 20 which is a reasonable number of bodies to fit comfortably in classrooms. 
3. If there are open spots because of unpaid dues after September 30th, new members may be nominated by another member for consideration of membership. 
4. Proposed members must be presented to and voted upon by the group at large before an invitation to join QQQ's is issued.
5. Members may not bring guests to regular monthly meetings but may invite guests to certain events, such as field trips or special presentations.  These will be announced in advance. 
6. No children under 18 will be allowed at any QQQ activity. 
7. These by-laws nay be revised by a majority vote of the membership, should they need correction or adjustments in the future.

*Remember September 30th is the deadline to hold your spot.  We look forward to our current members joining us again this year. Please advise Laurie of changes to your personal information (phone number, address, and e-mail) so that she will have accurate information for the new rosters.   Rosters and calendars will be handed out at the November meeting.Laurie Little, 1764 Laird Ave., Salt Lake City, UT 84108. 

• We will meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at Elaine's Quilt Block, 6970 South 3000 East, and will be starting the meetings right at 10:00 a.m.
• We will continue to have show-and-tell of completed projects. 
• At the beginning of each monthly meeting we will have two 3-minute spots presented by two separate members, which we are calling TIPS OR TOOLS and QUILT SHARE.  One member will present a 3-minute review of a quilting tool/or a quilting tip.  The other member will present a 3-minute presentation of a quilt (not their own personal project).  The quilt may an antique or a family heirloom and the presenter should share the history of the quilt an/or maker and speak about it's fabric, pattern and age.  These spots should not require extensive preparation and must be kept to the 3-minute limit.  After the meeting ends, members could look at the presented items in detail if they wish.  Sign-ups for these two monthly events will be done at the November meeting, so please be thinking about how and when you would like to contribute.

Please remember that the Annual Quilt Fest will be the first week of October at the Zermott resort (we hope you are attending; you should have already been making plans for this) so our first QQQ group meeting will not be until November 2nd at Elaine's at 10:00 am sharp.  Sidney Haglund (Jeanne's sister-in-law) will be our guest speaker, and she is bringing a trunk show.  This is an event that you might wish to invite a guest to attend, and you will not want to miss this meeting.  We will start right at 10:00 a.m.

Our December meeting will be for members only and will be the annual Holiday Brunch, which Tracie has generously offered to host at her home this year.  We'll talk more about it in November.
