Passing of the Torch

Joan (the hostess with the mostess) was again in top form as she welcomed us to her beautiful home for our end-of-the-year brunch.  We exchanged our friendship blocks (mine are pictured above and below) and we dined (and I do mean dined) on some of the most wonderful food.  Maybe we should call ourselves a Quilt/Gourmet group as the QQQs once again proved that they have many talents.  Shawn definitely gets the award for coming the longest distance; all the way from sunny Hawaii.  Amy, Liz' daughter and guest came from the Midwest to meet us and we were so glad to meet her.

On the business side, Kathy T. has graciously agreed to take over the reins of the QQQs for the coming year.  She will do a wonderful job (we all agree on that) but I know she will welcome all of our help and will need to be calling on us to pitch in and contribute.  And of course, the QQQs will step smartly up to the plate.  I know that for a fact because whenever I have needed help someone was always there to offer.  Thank you to Laurie (the official? treasurer) for handling the money again for us as you have done for so long.

Thank you all for your kind words and generous support this past year.  I truly have enjoyed every minute and am so grateful to all of you for your friendship and your talents; most especially your willingness to share both. 

After a short summer break, we'll start up again in September so watch your in-boxes and this blog for more information.

June Brunch

Well, another year has just about come and gone.  Joan has graciously invited us to her beautiful home for brunch once again in June.

Mark your calendars for June7 at 11:00 AM. 

Brunch will be provided by those of us who did not contribute to the Christmas brunch (or those who did and wish to bring something once again...we won't say not to any of you either).

Remember that those of us who are exchanging friendship blocks will need to bring them finished and ready to exchange as well.

Night at the Museum

A few of us were able to attend the Utah Quilt Guild's night at the Church History Museum on Thursday evening.  It was a fun night that many worked hard to coordinate.  There was even food!

We had to choose which activities to attend.  There were talks about quilting of course and we got a quick glimpse at the quilt show co-curated by Jeanne.  It's definitely worth going back for a much longer look in May so mark your calendars for an evening meeting on Tuesday May 3rd.


The 1857 magnificent 14th ward quilt

The highlight of the evening for me was the presentation about this quilt...the 14th ward raffle quilt.  It's now owned by the 3rd great-grandson of the raffle winner and was the subject of a book released in 2004 by his wife.  It is a wonderful book that I had been gifted when it was first released and so this was of particular interest to me.  It was a real treat to see half of the quilt in person.  And to get the rest of that story you'll need to read the book. Hope to see you on May 3rd.

April Meeting

Hi Quilters,

We will be meeting on April 5th at Elaines.

It will be a work day so bring your own work or your exchange blocks to work on if you haven't finished those yet.  We will be exchanging those blocks in June so mark your calendars.

May meeting will be a trip to the Church History Museum to see the exhibit on the museums quilts and some from our day.  A few of our members and neighbors have quilts in the exhibit so we look forward to seeing them.  Jeanne Fetzer was very instrumental in helping put this exhibit together.

I look forward to seeing this great exhibit and I know you all will to.

Bear Lake Retreat and February meeting news

Thanks to Kathy Tidwell for hosting us at her cabin in Bear Lake.  We had a stupendous time (really we did!).  I can't think of another adjective that better describes it.  You just can't beat the view over the sewing machines.  We could see from one end to the lake to the other.  Kathy was a generous hostess and her cabin was spectacular and couldn't have been better suited to a quilt retreat.  We ate great food, laughed, watched a movie, and got a huge amount of quilting done as well.  Kathy has indicated that she will host us again.  Don't miss out next time, if you can help it.

Our final count for the basket block exchange is 18.  It was fun to see the blocks in progress.  Can't wait to see them all done.

I came home from Elaine's to a message (finally) from This is the Place.  The Quilt show is running in conjunction with the Relief Society Anniversay.  It opens on March 8th to the public and we needed reservations.  Laurie has sent a deposit for our group.  It will cost $3.00 per person and starts at 7:00 p.m.  That's the second Tuesday in March.  So.....we won't be meeting at Elaine's in the morning on March 1st.  Our next Elaine's meeting will be in April.  Mark your calendars for March 8, Tues evening, 7:00 pm. 
This would be a good event to invite a guest to attend.

Some of you expressed an interest in making the Make-do pinpoke at the April meeting.  Could you e-mail me and let me know how many want to do this so I can start making up a supply list?  Those who don't could bring their blocks or other work to do at the April meeting

January Meeting and a Block Exchange

Hi Quilters,

If you missed the meeting this morning at Elaine's and want to join in the quilt block exchange the information is listed below. Kathy Tidwell has also invited us to join her at the Bear Lake Cabin for a quilting retreat and that information is also below. Please note that Kathy needs to have a firm commitment for anyone who is going by the 16th of January. The retreat is Jan. 25-27.


Quilt block exchange information

The theme is baskets, any pattern, any type (applique, pieced, paper-pieced, three dimensional, etc.)
All blocks are to be ON POINT.
Blocks are to be 8" finished, 8 1/2" unfinished, but do not trim them.
All participants will need to buy 3/4 yd of the same background fabric to use in the blocks. We purchased all that Elaine's had but another bolt of the background fabric is on order at Elaine's and will be on hold for our group when it comes in (if you didn't get yours on Tuesday). Bonnie has the fabric information should you wish to try and obtain it elsewhere before Elaine's gets a new bolt.
The color palate is the fabric Sweet Liberty by P & B Textiles (the ecru background). You may want to include this fabric in your block but it is not mandatory that you do so. The swatch is primarily to be used as a color palette so there is continuity in all blocks.  Bonnie has swatches of the flower fabric for those of you who didn't get one already.  Call her if you need it.

The blocks need to be finished and ready to exchange at our June quilt group meeting.

I think all but the last six people on the list got their background fabric and palate swatch. If you had someone pick yours up be sure to get in touch with them. Elaine's ran out of fabric so we are aware that some of you did not get your fabric today. Anyone else who wants to join in needs to let us know by our next meeting when we will give everyone the final count and number of blocks that need to be made.
People are encouraged to bring a sample of their block to the next meeting.

We will need to carpool in 4-wheel drive vehicles.

A huge "Thank You" to Kathy T. and Cristie for organizing the block exchange. They did a lot of work, as well as putting together swatches to be voted upon for the colors. We look forward to a fun exchange and hope everyone that can/wants to will participate.

We had a great brunch at Tracie's house last week.  Her home was decorated so beautifully and the company was great.  Their were many requests for recipes of the dishes that were contributed.  Hopefully we will get the cookbook out sometime this year.

We will be meeting at Elaine's in Jan.  We will be working on our own individual projects and don't forget to bring your Show-and-Tells.
